8,000 Boko Haram Members Surrender Voluntarily – Military

The Nigerian Military on Tuesday in Abuja said that no fewer than 8,000 Boko Haram members had voluntarily surrendered to its “Operation Safe Corridor” in the North-East.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig.-Gen. Rabe Abubakar disclosed this at a lecture organised by the FCT Correspondents’ Chapel of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).

The lecture with the theme, “Media-Military Relationship in the Fight against Insurgency”, was part of the activities marking the 2016 Press Week of the chapel.

He said that the surrendered insurgents were in a camp in Gombe waiting to be “deradicalised’’.

The general also stated that more than 10,000 Boko Haram captives had been rescued by the military.

He said some were reunited with families, while others were taken to Internally Displaced Person’s (IDP) camps.

Abubakar said that Boko Haram had been successfully decimated by the military and government was working hard on the rehabilitation of the victims and reconstruction of the affected areas.

The general also said that the military would soon launch “Operation Safe Corridor” to address the menace of herdsmen across the country.

He assured that the military operation would put an end to the wanton killings by the herdsmen.
Responding to questions on the recent action by the military declaring some journalists wanted, the general urged the media not to allow sentiments to influence their judgment on the issue.

Abubakar said the military should be allowed to do its work while assuring that no member of the media would be victimised unnecessarily.

He said that good military-media relationship was crucial to winning the war against insurgency.

FG Sacks 23 Prison Officers & Suspends 11 Others Due To Recent Prison Break

In a statement released by spokesperson of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Francis Enobore, the federal government has sacked 23 prison officers and suspended 11 others after the recent ‎jailbreak at Koton Kafe prison in Kogi, Kuje prison in Abuja and Nsukka Prison in Enugu state. The statement reads in part…

“Civil Defence, Fire, Immigration and Prisons Services Board (CDFIPB) considered the allegation of serious misconduct arising from your negligence of duty as leveled against you.
The Board thereafter approved your immediate dismissal from the Nigerian Prisons Service.. in line with the provision of the Public Service Rule 030402 (O) being an action prejudicial to the security of the State.

“Similarly the Controller-General of Prisons in his capacity has approved the dismissal of 7 junior staff serving in Kuje Medium Security prison and 10 other junior staff serving in Koton Karfe prison also implicated in the escape saga. The affected officers are to hand over all government properties in their possession to their immediate superior and proceed accordingly. “Meanwhile the officer in charge of Nsukka Prison DCP Okonkwo Lawrence and 10 others have been suspended over the recent prisoners’ escape from the prison.

The suspension is to allow for detailed and uninterrupted investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident in order to facilitate appropriate action by the authority.

“It would be recalled that in the wake of incessant escape of prisoners from some prisons in the country the CGP, Ja’afaru Ahmed on the 2nd of August, 2016 convened an emergency meeting of Command Officers and 241 officers in charge prisons across the country to reassess security measures for safe keeping of prisoners. Although a number of escapees have been recaptured, efforts are still being made to ensure that all the fugitives are apprehended and returned to prison custody.

“The Controller General wishes to assure all officers and men of the Nigerian Prisons Service of his readiness to support and encourage hard work and dedication to duty but frowns at acts of negligence capable of embarrassing the Service and the nation at large. While appreciating the collaboration of security agencies, vigilante groups and members of the public for their support, the Controller General further assures that all necessary measures are being put in place to guarantee maximum security of persons in Prison custody.”

Why we can’t just swap Boko Haram terrorists for Chibokgirls – Chief of Defence Staff

“political decision” that is beyond its powers.

The chief of defence staff, General Abayomi Olonishakin, on Monday said that the military is “going ahead” with its operations against the sect.

His position came days after Boko Haram released new video showing the girls that were kidnapped over two years ago.

A Boko Haram man who spoke in the video claimed that some of the girls had been killed by military airstrikes, while some were either seriously wounded or married off.

The video showed about 50 girls of the over 200 girls believed to still be in Boko Haram’s captivity.

The armed man said the girls would only be released if government sets free detained Boko Haram militants across the country.

General Olonishakin told journalists after a meeting of service chiefs at the presidential villa that swapping the militants was an entirely a “political decision”.

“Military decision is that we are going ahead with our operations. The operation is being conducted appropriately,” he said.

He said the military was “analysing” the video released by Boko Haram and would make appropriate comments at the right time.

JAMB Denies Imposing Candidates On Universities For Admission

The Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, on Friday, said it was untrue that the board was imposing candidates on universities for admission.

Oloyede told journalists in Benin, Edo, during his visit to JAMB’s zonal office that the board had resolved all issues of admission into tertiary institutions after due consultation with all stakeholders. ‎
‎”I know many of you are bothered and you want to hear from me about the admission.
“There is no stalemate; after due consultation with the Senate, House of Representatives, because they were worried and invited us, the matter was totally resolved,’’ he said.
He added that education and examination regulatory institutions “like NBTE, NCCE, NUC and JAMB itself, were also dully consulted’’.
According to him, there is no ambiguity on what will happen. As it has been announced by the Minister Education, there will be no written examination, no written Post-UTME examination by any institution.
“Apart from that, every other thing remains as it used to be, because the authority, autonomy and independence of the academic boards or the Senate of the respective institutions remain sacrosanct.
“They should determine their criteria, following the directives of the Federal Executive Council to all Federal universities about what should be merit, catchment areas, educationally-disadvantaged states and other things.

“Things remain the way they used to be. The only addition this year is, for now, there should be no written Post-UTME examination.
“Every Senate and academic board should determine its own admission policy.
“We must be fair to all; we must be federal in our attitude; we must be equitable in whatever we do. We must not extort the students.
“We must not exploit the masses of this nation; every other thing remains; that is the position of JAMB,” Oloyede said.
Pressed on the allegation of imposition of admission-seeking candidates on universities, he said, “I am telling you what the situation is today and that does not arise.
“The admission should be conducted as directed by the academic boards of the Senate of every respective institution except that there should be no written Post-UTME examination.
“The traditional guidelines as to spread in terms of merit, catchment area, educationally-disadvantaged states for federal institutions remain so.
“So, each proprietor at the state level and private level will determine the criteria and once that is done, you will ensure they are strictly followed. There should be no extortion of students.
“There should be no imposition of students on the institutions and also, every institution should be equitable to all,’’ he clarified.

US Declares 20 Nigerian States Unsafe

The United States Government has listed 20 of Nigeria’s 36 states as unsafe and asked its citizens living in the country to stay away from them.

Among the 20, it cited Borno, Adamawa and Yobe as a complete no-go area as “the ability of the US Mission to provide assistance to US citizens” in those states remains severely limited.
Members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect recently renewed attacks in Borno State, while Fulani herdsmen have scaled up killing of villagers and farmers in Adamawa State.
The travel warning, published on Wednesday, replaced an earlier one dated February 5, 2016.
In addition to the three frontline states, the Department of State also “recommends against all but essential travel to the following states due to the risk of kidnappings, robberies, and other armed attacks: Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, and Zamfara.
“The Department also warns against travel in the Gulf of Guinea, because of the threat of piracy”, the advisory published online added.
It added that based on safety and security risk assessments, the embassy maintains restrictions for travel by US officials to the states listed above.
Officials must also apply for advance clearance by the US Mission for any travel to those states.
The statement particularly urged vigilance around government security facilities; churches, mosques, other places of worship; locations where large crowds may gather such as hotels, clubs, bars, restaurants, markets, shopping malls; and other areas frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.

It added: “Security measures in Nigeria remain heightened due to threats posed by extremist groups, and U.S. citizens may encounter police and military checkpoints, additional security, and possible road blocks throughout the country.
“Hundreds of thousands of Nigerians have been displaced as a result of violence in the north.”
The Department of State noted that kidnappings remained a security concern throughout Nigeria, as criminal elements across the country orchestrated kidnappings for ransom; Islamic extremists, operating predominantly in the North, also have been known to conduct kidnappings.
Criminals or militants have abducted foreign nationals, including U.S. citizens, from off-shore and land-based oil facilities, residential compounds, airports, and public roadways.
It said: “Separatist groups have staged demonstrations in Abia, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Enugu, Imo, Lagos, and Rivers states, some of which have turned violent.
“Militant groups have destroyed oil production infrastructure in Bayelsa and Delta states.
“U.S citizens are advised to avoid the areas of these states where these incidents have occurred.
“Attacks by pirates off the coast of Nigeria in the Gulf of Guinea have increased substantially in recent years.
“Armed gangs have boarded both commercial and private vessels to rob travellers.
“The Nigerian Navy has limited capacity to respond to criminal acts at sea.”

U.K Court Sentences Nigerian Woman To 22 Years In Prison For Trafficking Women & Girls

Nigerian trafficker who threatened to use ‘juju magic’ against the women and children she helped to bring into Europe for forced prostitution, has been sentenced to 22 years imprisonment today.

A trafficker who threatened to use "juju magic" against the women and children she helped bring into Europe for forced prostitution has been sentenced to 22 years imprisonment today.

Franca Asemota, 38, was convicted on 3rd August at Isleworth Crown Court of eight counts of conspiracy to traffic persons for sexual exploitation, two counts of trafficking persons outside of the UK for sexual exploitation and two counts of assisting unlawful immigration.

Asemota was part of a criminal network that trafficked girls, boys and women from Nigeria to Europe, using the threat of "juju magic" to guarantee their compliance.

David Davies, CPS London reviewing lawyer, said: "This case demonstrates how the CPS will work with partners, in the UK and overseas, in order to tackle the trafficking gangs who make huge profits from human misery.

"Franca Asemota played a key role in exploiting the poverty and vulnerability of her victims with the aim of forcing them into prostitution to make money for criminals.

"These girls were from poor, rural backgrounds with little education or knowledge of the world. They were targeted because of this and promised legitimate jobs in Europe. Only when they were far away from their homes were they told the truth – that they would have to work as prostitutes.

"The traffickers used alleged juju magic to exert complete control over their victims, using rituals to ‘curse’ them and ensure their compliance. The girls were told that if they disobeyed their captors or tried to escape, the curse would cause them injury, infertility or even death.

"Although only five victims have been identified the evidence showed that she facilitated the trafficking of around 40 people, mainly young girls, between August 2011 and May 2012.

"I would like to thank the victims in this case for supporting the prosecution and giving evidence in court. They have been through a traumatic ordeal and their bravery and courage has helped bring Asemota to justice."
